Benson Bubbler
Benson Bubbler
8”x8” oil on canvas
In downtown Portland there are now 52 of the four bowl fountains designed by A.E. Doyle, who also designed the Multnomah library, and the Multnomah Falls lodge. The first was installed on the corner of SW 5th Ave. and Washington St. in 1912. With the help from a $10,000 donation from local business man and philanthropist Simon Benson, 18 more were installed by 1917.
The Portland water bureau has maintained them over the years, allowing the copper to patina while cleaning them twice weekly, and reducing the water usage with different changes like narrowing the feed lines, and adding small flow-restricting devices inside the bubblers. Most of them run from 5:30am to 11:30pm all year long, only stopping for freezing weather.
Possibly because I am still new to this area, the abundance of water really stands out to me. To have fresh clean drinking water, freely available for all seems like a luxury coming from my drought stricken homeland.
Shipping
If you would like to pick up the painting in person, please send us an email to make arrangements jack@jackwrayartist.com. We are based in Portland, OR, and travel to Monterey, CA frequently.
Jack’s paintings often have beautiful texture that add to the depth of the image. This is achieved by building up paint through the creative process. Generally, paintings are dry to the touch at 3 weeks, and are suitable to ship at this point. Full curing of the painting can take as long as one year. Please allow for up to 4 weeks to deliver commissioned or new paintings, and always reach out by email with any questions or needs.
The Small Details
Color nuances as they appear on your screen can vary from what we see with our eyes in person. If you are unsure about the colors, we will be happy to send more photos or closeups. Please be sure the painting is right for you before purchasing. Paintings are sold as is, and not “upon approval”. If a painting is damaged during shipping, we will work with you to make it right.
