Ka'U Desert Original and Prints
Ka'U Desert Original and Prints
Ka'u desert on the south side of Hawai’i island. It is in the rain shadow of Kilauea volcano and although it receives too much rain to be a technical desert, the rain it does get is mixed with sulfur dioxide escaping the vents in the crater and blowing downwind.
Sulfur dioxide combines with water to form sulfuric acid which falls as acid rain (30-50 inches per year). The Desert is underlain by porous lava flows and volcanic ash, and rainwater tends to percolate quickly deep into the ground. But there are still some plants, shrubs and even small trees growing out of cracks in the now solidified lava flows.
My hike across the desert was wonderful. It is an amazingly empty place; plants, bees, and Ne ne foot prints and droppings were my only living company. The wind started to talk to me after a couple hours, and the time slowed down. I soon realized I was off schedule, sun was setting and I was still miles from my pick up site. No cell signal, no trail, I started to run from cairn to cairn until I found a road marking the other side of the desert just as the stars started shining. I loved it out there, and can still feel the peace and stillness that surrounded when I sat next to this beautiful flowering shrub rising from the ash and igneous rock.
